News Release - 09 May 2023

Shetland Island Games Association today announced the 103-strong team that will represent Shetland at this year’s NatWest International Island Games in Guernsey.

This year’s team will include 88 competitors and 15 officials from ten sports - archery, athletics, badminton, cycling, football, golf, sailing, swimming, table tennis, and triathlon. The final entries have recently been submitted to the Guernsey Organising Committee ahead of yesterday’s deadline of Monday 8th May, which marks two months before the Opening Ceremony that will take place in St. Peter Port on Saturday 8th July.

Over 2000 competitors from 24 island teams are expected to take part in this year’s Games.

Team Shetland will again include athletes Seumas Mackay and Katie Dinwoodie, who both won gold medals on the track at the last Games in Gibraltar in July 2019. Also taking part will be 2019 bronze medal winning swimmers Jasmin Smith, and sisters Annie and Emmie Hutchison.

This year's team also includes archers, golfers and the men's football squad - none of whose sports were included in the sports programme of the 2019 Games.

The Games normally takes place every two years but the 2021 Games was postponed due to the Covid pandemic, meaning it's been a four-year gap since the last Games.

Local marine engineering firm Malakoff Limited are again the Official Team Sponsor this year, a role they have fulfilled since 2013. Their financial support will help fund the costs of Team Shetland's travel and accommodation in Guernsey. Cooke Aquaculture Scotland are also backing the team as Associate Team Sponsor and Harper Macleod as a Team Supporter.

Lesley Hutchison, Vice Chair of Shetland Island Games Association said: “We’re pleased to be able to announce the Team list and a strong team for this year's Games. It's been long wait after Covid but we're excited to now be in the home straight towards 'Guernsey 2023'.

"We're grateful for funding from the Shetland Community Benefit Fund and we’d especially like to thank our three sponsors Malakoff Limited, Cooke Aquaculture Scotland and Harper Macleod for supporting us again.  It’s great to have them on board for the 2023 Games and we’re looking forward to a spectacular week of sport in Guernsey in two months time.”
