This year’s team will include competitors and officials from nine sports - athletics, badminton, cycling, sailing, shooting, squash, swimming, table tennis, and triathlon. The final entries have recently been submitted to the Gibraltar Organising Committee alongside entries from the other competing islands, ahead of the Opening Ceremony that will take place in Gibraltar on Saturday 6th July. Around 1800 competitors from 22 island teams are expected to take part in this year’s Games.
Team Shetland will again include track athlete Seumas Mackay, clay shooter John Magnus Laurenson and swimmer Felix Gifford who all won gold medals at the last Games in the Swedish island of Gotland in July 2017. Also taking part will be bronze medal winners track athlete Faye Cox, and swimmers Jasmin Smith and Emmie Hutchison.
Local marine engineering firm Malakoff Limited will again be the Official Team Sponsor this year, a title they have held since 2013. The financial support provided by Malakoff Limited will help fund the costs of the Team Shetland's participation in Gibraltar, including the costs of travel and accommodation.
Claire Christey, Operations and Contracts Manager at Malakoff Limited said: “We’re delighted to back the Team again for the fourth consecutive time, helping Shetland’s best sportsmen and women to attend the Games. Lesley Hutchison, Vice Chair of Shetland Island Games Association said: “We’re pleased to be able to announce the Team list and we’ll have a strong team with a mix of youth and experience again. We’re delighted to have the support of Malakoff Limited again as our Team Sponsor and it’s a great boost for the Team to know that we have such a long established local firm behind us.
