New Chair for Team Shetland

3rd November 2015

At the Biennial General Meeting last week, Shetland Island Games Association (SIGA) elected Karen Woods as the new Chairperson to lead Team Shetland’s preparations for the 2017 NatWest Island Games.

Karen has spent seven years on the Committee as the athletics representative, which has seen her manage Shetland’s track and field athletes at the last four Games since 2009.

Karen said – “I am looking forward to the challenge of leading our Association as we look ahead to Gotland in 2017.   The 2015 Games in Jersey was a great success for us, with a fantastic medal tally and some incredible performances from the Team.

"Our committee works hard to plan as much as we can so that Shetland’s best sportsmen and women can concentrate on their individual training leading up to and during the Games.    We’ve already started the initial discussions for Gotland, including transport, accommodation and fundraising options, and we’ll continue this over the next 18 months or so.”

Karen Woods takes over from Andrew Inkster, who has been SIGA Chair for the last seven years, having previously been at the Games as a clay shooting competitor.

In July this year, Andrew was elected to serve on the Executive Committee of the International Island Games Association, the organisation with overall responsibility for the Games.  This role will now see him involved in assisting future Host Islands as well as providing support to a number of other competing islands and sports technical committees.
