News Release - Wed 26th April 2017

With less than two months till the Opening Ceremony on 24th June 2017, Shetland Island Games Association (SIGA) has now submitted their entry of 129 competitors and officials for this year’s NatWest Island Games in the Swedish island of Gotland.

In recent months, local sports organisations have finalised their team selections for those who will represent Shetland at this year’s Games.  Team Shetland will be competing in eleven sports during the Games week – archery, athletics, badminton, cycling, men’s football, golf, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, table tennis and triathlon – with Shetland competitors taking part in over 130 different events.

Karen Woods, SIGA Chair, commented - “We’ve been discussing plans for Gotland for well over a year now, working towards this date when sports can provide individual entries, that we have now submitted to the Gotland Organising Committee.  The Shetland team again includes a mix of youth and experience, and our competitors and coaches will now be working hard on their final preparations for the Games.  It’s a busy and exciting few weeks ahead and we’re looking forward to seeing Shetland’s competitors perform at their best, alongside talented sportsmen and women from other islands.”

“We’re grateful to our Team Sponsor, local engineering and fabrication contractor Malakoff Limited, for their continued financial support for the team, and to all those who have supported our fundraising efforts.”

Dougie Stevenson, Managing Director of Malakoff Limited commented – “We’re really pleased to be the Official Sponsor of Team Shetland for a third consecutive NatWest Island Games, In Jersey in 2015, Shetland track athlete Emma Leask (left) took silver medal in the Women’s 400 metre race, with Catherine Reid from the Isle of Man (centre) taking the gold medal, and Mikaela Harrison (right) taking bronze.
