Football - Women

Women’s football kicked off in Shetland in 2004, as local players put together a team to compete in the Games that were held in Shetland in 2005. On their debut in the Games, the highlight of the tournament for the Shetland Women’s Football Team was a 2-2 draw against Guernsey in front of a home crowd on the Seafield pitch in Lerwick.

Since 2005, Shetland Women’s FC has grown in strength and there is now an active summer league with around half-a-dozen local teams involved. The Women’s Team have also established links with Orkney and clubs on the Scottish Mainland and regularly travel south to play cup and friendly matches, or occasionally host games in Shetland. Since 2005, the Women’s Football Team have not yet been to another Games, but are hopeful of making an appearance at some future date.

Shetland Women’s Football Club is currently not represented on the SIGA Committee.
